An Overview of Generations: Gen Purple, Winter Purple, and Gen White

The Black Magic Chickens breeding program is the culmination of years of thoughtful selection, patience, and dedication to refining Ayam Cemani lines. Here is a detailed look at the process and development of the current generations in our program.

Gen Purple

The first milestone in our breeding program was “Gen Purple.” This generation emerged from pairing high-quality Cemani hens with a carefully selected rooster, unrelated to the hens. Finding the right rooster was not easy; it took over a year to source one with desired traits.

The offspring of Gen Purple displayed promising characteristics, including the dark pigmentation and many other desirable features. However, some areas needed improvement. Their body structure could be gamier, their tongues darker, and occasional white tips on chicks’ feathers—though these faded to black—indicated a need for refinement. While Gen Purple demonstrated no feather leakage, the variation in quality across the generation prompted further development.

Gen Winter Purple

To enhance the qualities of Gen Purple, the hens were bred with a rooster from a darker tongue line. This rooster showed a dark gray tongue and black mouth—key indicators of the Ayam Cemani standard. Although his temperament was less than ideal, the resulting hens from this generation were used as breeders for the next phase.

Gen White

The Gen Winter Purple hens were bred with a new bloodline that brought an exciting level of quality to the breeding program. This bloodline included a rooster with a black tongue—a hallmark of Indonesian Ayam Cemani quality. Though the hatch rate from the high-value eggs ($15 per egg) was modest, the resulting offspring exceeded expectations.

These birds exhibited remarkable consistency, with black mouths, medium-to-dark gray tongues, and uncommon wild feathering and more lack of feathering. The emphasis shifted slightly to prioritize tongue pigmentation and maintain uniformity in traits. A rooster named Vader emerged as the leader of this generation.

By selectively thinning the flock and refining breeding practices, Gen White became a turning point. The chicks from this generation displayed a uniform “black-on-black” appearance, setting a new standard for the program. As these birds matured, their quality affirmed Gen White as a foundational line.

Future Generations

Looking ahead, the next generation will represent another leap forward. The current breeding rooster is from a pure Indonesian import line and possesses a black tongue—a trait highly sought after for Ayam Cemani breeders. This rooster will be paired with select hens from Gen White to produce a new generation expected to hatch this summer.

This ongoing journey is a testament to the dedication to preserving and improving the Ayam Cemani breed. Each generation builds on the strengths of the previous, working toward a uniform, high-quality flock that reflects the breed’s true potential.

Shipping and Incubation Guidelines

Shipping Details

•Delivery Timeline: Orders are shipped via Priority Mail (3-5 days). If your order is placed later in the week, shipping will occur the following Monday to ensure freshness.

•Secure Packaging: Eggs are carefully packed, with extra eggs often included as a courtesy.

•Insurance: Packages are insured. In the event of damage during transit, please file a claim with the carrier. While I ensure proper handling on my end, I cannot control delays or issues that arise after shipping.

•Freshness and Viability: Eggs are freshly laid the day of or the day before shipping. While eggs can remain viable for up to a month, these are at their peak freshness. Minor shipping delays typically do not affect hatchability.

Incubation Guidelines

•Preparation: Ensure your incubator is calibrated for correct temperature and humidity using an independent thermometer and hygrometer.

•Resting Eggs: Allow eggs to rest for 8-12 hours before incubation if air sacs are disturbed during shipping.

•For disturbed air sacs: Incubate pointy side down without turning (use an egg carton to secure them).

•For intact air sacs: Eggs can be incubated on their side or upside down.

•Incubation Conditions: Maintain a temperature of 99.5°F and humidity at 60%. Avoid increasing humidity during incubation unless necessary. If your incubator fogs due to high humidity, create additional ventilation by drilling a small hole in the lid or slightly propping it open while maintaining stable temperatures.

•Hatch Rates: Hatch rates cannot be guaranteed due to variables outside our control, including shipping, incubation setup, and environmental factors. Refer to online resources or videos for additional hatching advice.

Post-Hatch Care

•Feed: Begin chicks on medicated chick feed. Once they start developing hard feathers (around 3-4 weeks), switch to high-protein game bird crumbles. Avoid layer feed, as its high calcium content can harm chicks.

•Environment: Provide a clean, well-ventilated space for chicks to minimize the risk of illness.

•Heating: Use a heat source that allows chicks to regulate their warmth by moving closer or farther away. A ceramic heat bulb is a safe option. Ensure the heat source is positioned securely and not in direct contact with chicks.

•Housing: Initially, use a plastic bin with holes for ventilation. Multiple bins can be connected to separate sleeping and feeding areas. Around 3 weeks of age, chicks will outgrow this setup and should be moved to a larger enclosure.

By following these guidelines, you can help ensure the best possible outcomes for your eggs and chicks.
